Organic viticulture

At Gil Berzal, being green is not a fashion or a way of winning certificates for marketing purposes. It is a way of life, a belief, something we have practiced for years.

Our aim is to transmit the true essence of our vines into every bottle, so that when consumers try one of our wines, they are transported by their senses to our vineyard. We want to create an experience that goes far beyond simply drinking a good wine.

Towards a natural, healthy and better viticulture.

Research as an engine for development

Our aim is to transmit the true essence of our vines into every bottle, so that when consumers try one of our wines, they are transported by their senses to our vineyard. We want to create an experience that goes far beyond simply drinking a good wine.

At Gil Berzal, being green is not a fashion or a way of winning certificates for marketing purposes. It is a way of life, a belief, something we have practiced for years. Proof of this lies in out recent Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), and we are proud to be the first winery in the world to win this award for a red wine.

As we have said, we live in a holistic way and this attitude runs through all our work. As such, we approach environmentalism with a deeper perspective, practising biodynamic and regenerative techniques that reach the soul of things, the root of life. We reduce external consumption by making natural substances with plants, microorganisms and minerals from the local area, aiming to further reduce our intervention in the meeting between nature and the vineyard. This also strengthens the plants, combats diseases and gets us even closer to a completely ecological viticulture.

We only use organic fertilisers and we use no herbicides or chemical products at all. As we only use biological pest control methods, we care for our vines and the local wildlife and our care for and integration of native bird and bats, which forms part of a unique research project that is underway right now. Caring for the environment and protecting our landscapes are very important to us so we make sure our vines blend into the landscape and the hillsides and undergrowth are neither burned nor broken up.

All the waste water, plastic wrapping, bottles, corks, boxes, labels and so on are separated for recycling and treatment. All the cuttings from winter pruning are passed through a machine that makes bales of vines which can be used as barbecue fuel or as a natural filter in our fermentation process. We hope that very soon we will be able to use it as biomass.

Bodega Gil Berzal goes a step further

Respecting the environment

In modern agriculture, producers are required to use methods that respect the environment to meet high standards of quality.

The viticulture methods employed at Bodega Gil Berzal respond to this requirement. We ensure the viability and sustainability of our agriculture with a reasonable approach with systems and processes that make full use of natural resources and production mechanisms. We employ biological control methods and other techniques that are compatible with the demands of society, environmental protection and production of quality. This extends to how we handle, produce, bottle and label our wine.

Bodega Gil Berzal represents the wine sector's commitment to quality and the environment. It is important to stress that our viticulture does not just meet the established minimums, but rather we go a step further. We pursue ecology in its truest sense.
